Peter, James, and John already believed in life after death, but surely this moment dramatically increased their convictions that everything they had been taught about life after death was absolutely true. And this is a truth we all need to remember: Whether your religious experience is like that of the Apostle Paul, who was blinded by the light of Christ on the road to Damascus; or John Wesley, who felt his heart strangely warmed at Aldersgate; or Horace Bushnell, who confessed to being nurtured in the faith over a lifetime in New England, the real test of Christianity is not the ecstasy of the mountaintop experience, but the compassion and sympathy you show for others in the valley below. Maybe the sleepiness of the disciples is emblematic for how often they had missed the glory of Jesus when it shined right in front of them day in and day out throughout Jesus ministry. Perhaps he is also tying it to the Feast of Tabernacles, where the Israelites present offerings for seven days and then have a holy convocation on the eighth day (Leviticus 23:36). Being exposed to the glory of God is an awesome and even terrifying experience. Now, lets think about that for just a moment. Spark Inspiration: Jesus exodon (death/resurrection) is the great salvation event of the NT, freeing believers from bondage to sin and death. Another possibility is that the proposal to build three booths equates Jesus with Moses and Elijahdiminishing Jesus unique status as the Messiah of God (see Peters confession in v. 20). Jesus himself metamorphosed into some radically different. It goes without saying they had no way to recognize them physically. Its the kind of thing a loving Father does for his beloved Son. As he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became white and dazzling (v. 29). The Bible has a more remarkable story of a metamorphosis. He was an eyewitness to the majesty and glory of Christ on that mountain. The word glory is used in the Bible to speak of various wonderful thingsbut it is used especially to speak of Gods gloryan aura associated with Gods appearance that reveals Gods majesty to humans. It is interesting to note that although Luke tells us that Jesus garments shone as bright as a flash of lightning, we are not told that Jesus face shone, only that it changed. In the Greek this is literally that the EIDOS of his face changed, the image, the appearance, of his face was altered. The apostles are sent to preach and heal. Jesus went up the mountain to pray (9:29), perhaps to commune with God concerning his destiny. At the base of the mountain, they find themselves confronted by a great crowd and a distraught father who pleads for his son, who is possessed by a demon. When the voice came, Jesus was found alone (v. 36a). If we do not know Jesus, we should turn to him. The first step to such a prayer is stillness and silence, or what should have been Peters response on the mountain. Yet we are told that for a time during this epiphany of glory, the disciples were sleepy! The disciples have survived their encounter with God! Not only is the father distraught because his son is suffering, but his situation is made even more difficult by the fact that this is his only child. In other words, long about the time Jesus could use all the support he could get, the disciples are simply unavailable to him in any meaningful way.
