Although women activists such as Wangari Maathai, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Albertina Sisulu, and Winnie Mandela are globally renowned in their own right, and while scholars have done outstanding work about African women’s activism, there is more work to be done in highlighting African women’s significant contributions to social movement building.
Why does it only pay such little attention to the realisation of a once utopian fantasy of female majority leadership in Rwanda – where, since 2008, women have held over half the parliamentary seats? As an interest group, African feminism set off in the early twentieth century with women like Adelaide Casely-Hayford, the Sierra Leonian women’s rights activist who contributed widely to both pan-African and feminist goals, Charlotte Maxeke who in 1918 founded the Bantu Women’s League in South Africa and Huda Sharaawi who in 1923 established the Egyptian Feminist Union. But the western feminist movement is still mostly disengaged from the struggles being fought – and won – by women in other parts of the world. The movement contributed to a revitalization and re-examining of the Black feminist movement.
