When members of the South African Students Organisation (SASO) were arrested in the autumn of 1974, SATIS orchestrated the sending of hundreds of cards and telegrams to the South African authorities. Because of widespread opposition from the British public the only weapons sold to South Africa by  the 1970–74 Conservative government were seven Wasp helicopters. In Scotland AAM supporters picketed the South African consulate in Glasgow. They were won by the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front under the leadership of Robert Mugabe. This leaflet was distributed during the May 1979 British general election campaign.

Thousands of people marched through central London on 11 November 1979 to demand that Britain should not agree to any settlement on Zimbabwe that fell short of genuine majority rule.

Two days before, Nkosazana Dlamini and Canon Collins spoke at a commemoration service in the crypt of St Martin’s in the Fields. A group calling itself the Congress of the People adopted a Freedom Charter in 1955 asserting that “South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black or white.” The government arrested 150 people, charging them with high treason. Former Robben Island prisoner Joseph Mdluli was killed by South African Security Police on 19 March 1976, the day after he was detained under the Terrorism Act.

The campaign was supported by the churches and the TUC. From 1977 the Labour government began a tentative rethink of its attitude to trade and investment in South Africa. RTZ operated the Rossing uranium mine in Namibia in defiance of a judgement by the International Court of Justice that South Africa’s rule there was illegal. It accused the Labour government and the Conservative opposition of being equally culpable of giving military support to South Africa. Other companies came under fire as stakeholders put pressure on universities, trade unions and churches to sell their holdings.

In July 1973 Portuguese dictator Marcelo Caetano visited London to mark the 600th anniversary of the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance. The group campaigned for the release of political prisoner and former trade unionist David Kitson, serving a 20-year sentence in South Africa. Anti-apartheid protesters picketed the South African Embassy on 11 October 1977, UN Day for Southern African political prisoners. Representative Ronald V. Dellums (D-CA) introduced the CBC's first bill concerning apartheid in 1972.

They were protesting against the participation of a South African player in the tournament. This pamphlet was written for the Dambusters Mobilising Committee, a coalition of groups set up to campaign against the involvement of British companies in the project.

Other target companies were GEC, ICI, Barclays Bank and British Steel. The UN initiated tortuous negotiations on Namibia which eventually led to independence in 1990.

The vigil and petition were part of the campaign launched by Southern Africa the Imprisoned Society (SATIS) at its founding conference in December 1973.
