Shantideva became a monk under Jinadeva, and so he was given the name Shantideva, coming from the name of his teacher. They asked him to give a teaching but he didn’t listen to them and said, ‘I don’t know, please don’t ask me, I don’t know.’ He didn’t give his consent.
