Not even the Socreds had expected to win the election. It would be the last time Albertans elected the Social Credit Party to form a government. Although it was not apparent at the time, this began a long-term decline for the party.
In 1991, Randy Thorsteinson, a Reform Party of Canada activist, was elected as party president. The two parties merged into a single national party under the Social Credit name, and Caouette won the leadership on the first ballot. Thorsteinson founded the Alberta Alliance Party in October 2002. In 1992, Thorsteinson was elected as leader, and Robert Alford as president.

In the August 22, 1935 election, much to its own surprise, Social Credit won a landslide victory, taking 54% of the vote and winning 56 of the 63 seats in the Legislative Assembly.

There was widespread discontent with the overly cautious behaviour of the UFA government, and in some cases, local UFA chapters openly supported Social Credit candidates. While they mostly held their own in their rural heartlands, their support in Edmonton and Calgary plummeted from 1968. "Bible Bill" Aberhart died in 1943 and was replaced by his Provincial Secretary and Minister of Trade and Industry, Ernest Manning.
