Some interesting moments with an ending somewhat echoing Bester’s Tiger!

Parts of this book felt to me like some of those crazy comic books I read back in the 80s, where in an economically and ecologically broken USA, Trump was president and the government watched its citizens through video-cameras in the streets, while the TV was full of violent shit and people was mesmerized by all sort of screens. He creates a new "worm" which is designed to destroy all secrecy. Intending to use the computer facilities at G2S to ensure that his stolen code is still valid, he signs on as a "systems rationalizer" with the company.

Warned by Hearing Aid, Nick is able to penetrate the military computers and manufacture a counter-order to stop the plane just before it reaches the town. Used the idea of the computer worm and virus (called a phage in the book) for maybe the first time in sci-fi. The Shockwave Rider is a science fiction novel by John Brunner, originally published in 1975. Credit where it’s due in terms of its place in SF genre history, but on its own merit, it didn’t make me want to read anything else by Brunner. Welcome back. Prescient proto-cyberpunk classic.

Nick in turn sends another worm into the network to destroy that one.

However Nick collapses completely when told that a representative from Tarnover is coming to his promotional interview at G2S. Brunner tosses us right in and expects us to catch up quickly. He wrote his first novel, Galactic Storm, at 17, and published it under the pen-name Gill Hunt, but he did not start writing full-time until 1958. In place of the old system, Nick has designed the worm to enforce a kind of utilitarian socialism, with people's worth being defined by their roles in society, not their connections in high places.

Also DARPA's vilified, criticized and withdrawn initiative to do the same with military and government policies) A very fun book, and still an extremely worthwhile read. (Brunner invented the term worm for this program, as a self-replicating program that propagates across a computer network – the word was later adopted by computer researchers as the name for this type of program.). Obviously it’s hard to read this without comparing Brunner’s future vision with the internet as we know it today, but much of it is strikingly prophetic in terms of computer networks that provide an overload of mindless (and sometimes cruel) entertainment, gather information on people (personal details, bank info, medical records, work history, etc) and become so central to daily life as to make you vulnerable to attack (such as someone deciding to get petty revenge on you by going online and deleting your utility accounts, for example). The Shockwave Rider is a book before its time, published in 1975, the book provides a vision for the future of computer networks today. The book ends optimistically, with there being no more privileged hiding of information, no more secret conspiracies of the rich and powerful. Only when he was noticed by a schoolteacher, and subsequently recruited for Tarnover, did he find a group of people with whom he could identify. Prescient proto-cyberpunk classic. Most of the characters live with the feeling that their lives could be turned upside down in an instant because of someone breaking into the data held on the network.

A biological tapeworm consists of a head attached to a long train of reproductive segments, each of which can produce more worms when detached. Paul T. Freeman has spent his 39 years studying, learning, and believing in the objectives of Tarnover and Electric Skillet. This will only happen fully if the results of a plebiscite, again conducted over the network, allow it. I could really get into the (pre) cyberpunk aspects of this, yet the plot and character development are not strong points.

This is great social SF. Goldman, Stephen H. (1978). Nick's talent extends to programming the network using only a touch-tone telephone. The theme of patterns in perception runs through the entire novel. The Shockwave Rider is a science fiction novel by John Brunner, originally published in 1975. Infrastructure has been allowed to crumble, and characters who reside within "paid avoidance zones" receive compensation from the government in lieu of actual services.
